Velour Factory
The "Velours d'Urfé" has been created to transform the last working factory in France entirely used for the production of high quality velour material into a centre of excellence for tourism, cultural activites as well as continuing the making of fabrics.
The factory was built at the end of the 19th Century on the edge of St Just en Chevalet. The output of the factory is used in the French high fashion industry and for export. Fabric production takes place on irreplaceble machines dating from the early 20th C.
The original owners went into liquidation in 1980 leading to 70 redundancies. However the business was taken up by various companies and is currently run by MVP (Manufacture de Velours et Peluche) owned by the well known fabric makers Bouton-Renaud SA. The fabric is made in St Just en Chevalet and transported to Vaux-en-Velin, near Lyon, for dyeing. An international network ensures the effective marketing and distribution of the material.
